Today is World Down Syndrome Day! The purpose of World Down Syndrome Day to help raise awareness of what Down syndrome is, what it means to have Down syndrome, and how people with Down syndrome play a vital role in our lives and communities. It is part of our pro-life message to show that all humans have equal dignity and value – no matter how many chromosomes they have.
Recently in America the number of people with Down Syndrome have fallen drastically. However, this is not because of a lack of babies with Down Syndrome, an astounding “92 percent of all women who receive a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome choose to terminate their pregnancies,” according to research reviewed by Dr. Brian Skotko. This is heartbreaking as people with Down Syndrome bring so much joy to the world and teach people so much about life.
In recent research presented on MSNBC.com: A collection of three different surveys conducted by doctors at Children’s Hospital in Boston suggest the reality of Down syndrome has been a positive for a vast majority of parents, siblings and people with Down syndrome themselves.
